The cocktail is said to have been created in the 1930s in honour of the Italian boxer Primo Carnera, known as “l’Americano”. Carnera was the first European to win the heavyweight title overseas and achieved enormous success, becoming a popular and much-loved figure.
The Americano is one of the most iconic Italian aperitifs, combining the two typical products of that period, Campari bitter and the Vermouth invented in Turin with a splash of soda.
Here is a version with red beer instead of soda and a spicy note of cinnamon.
